Muted Tune

Practice on the go, without hearing yourself.

Muted Tune connects to your recording program and puts every song from your session on everybody's phone.

Free during the beta. Only your band can hear your recordings.

How it works

  1. Record a session

Use your music program on one computer in your room, like you do now.

  2. Send it here

Upload the file in your browser, or let Muted Tune on your recording computer send it for you (Linux and Windows).

  3. Play along on your phone

Every instrument has its own track. Mute yours and play.

What works today, and what's coming
Working today
  • Each song split into one track per instrument, as arranged in your project
  • Mute, solo, volume and loop for each track, in your phone's browser
  • Personal accounts: each member signs in with their own email and password
  • Invite bandmates by link, QR code or email
  • Tell it what you play (several parts are fine) and your tracks start muted
  • Upload a project file (.dawproject, from Export in your music program) from any computer
  • Upload one audio file per instrument, or one zip of them, from any music program
  • From a mixer or recorder: upload its files or folder (built from the makers' manuals, not yet tried on real hardware)
  • Notifications on your phone when a session is ready (optional, per device)
  • Optional admin approval for new members, and password reset by email
  • A setup page for your recording computer (Linux and Windows)
  • Download everything as one zip, any time
  • Delete your band for real (7 days to change your mind), or your own account
  • A privacy page that says what the software does with your recordings
  • Automatic uploads from your recording computer, with desktop notifications (Linux; Windows in early testing)
  • Rename songs and sessions; your whole band sees the change
  • Play your own audio files in the same mixer; they stay on your device
  • Up to 14 people and 2 recording computers per band
Test version
  • Automatic uploads from Mac computers: a first Mac version for testers, not yet tried on a real Mac
Which music programs work
Tested with Muted Tune
  • Ardour: read automatically. Record and save as usual, nothing to export
  • Bitwig Studio (5.0.9 or later exports DAWproject)
Exports DAWproject, not yet tested with Muted Tune
  • PreSonus Studio One 6.5+ (now Fender Studio Pro)
  • Steinberg Cubase 14+, Nuendo 14+, Cubasis 3.7.1+
  • VST Live 2.2+
  • n-Track Studio 10.2.2+
Read automatically, not yet tested with Muted Tune
  • Reaper: record and save as usual, nothing to export
Everything else: upload stems

Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, FL Studio, GarageBand and any other program that can export one audio file per instrument: export the files, all starting at the same point, and upload them in your browser. Multitrack recorders and digital mixers (Zoom, Tascam, Behringer X32, Allen & Heath, Soundcraft) are supported from their manuals, but untested on real hardware. The stems upload itself is working; we have not checked each program's export menu.

These lists change as programs add support. Sources for the DAWproject list: Bitwig's DAWproject FAQ, the DAWproject README (github.com/bitwig/dawproject) and Production Expert.

Your music is always yours

Only your band's signed-in members can play your recordings. We don't share them, sell them, or use them for anything else. Payment and sign-in services never receive your music or song titles. Nothing is processed by AI.

You can download everything and delete your band for real. Read the privacy page.

Who it's for

Bands that rehearse in one room and write their own songs, and solo players (a band of one).

Any computer can upload in the browser. The recording computer program, which uploads by itself, runs on Linux. Your recording program should export DAWproject files or one audio file per instrument; Bitwig Studio is the only DAWproject program tested so far, see Which music programs work, above.

Beta and price

Muted Tune is free during the beta. Enter the code BETA2026 when you start your band to join the beta group; beta bands get their first months free when paid plans begin. Beta bands can earn free months by helping us test.

Planned: the band is the paid unit and members are always free. Price not set. A lapsed plan goes read-only; nothing is deleted.

Questions

Do I need special gear?

A way to record each instrument on its own track (an audio interface, or a multitrack mixer or recorder), and any computer to upload from. We have tested Ardour and Bitwig Studio.

Which recording programs work?

Ardour is read automatically: record and save as usual, and Muted Tune sends each session by itself. Reaper is read the same way but not yet tested. Bitwig Studio is tested with Muted Tune through its DAWproject export. Studio One, Cubase, Nuendo, Cubasis, VST Live and n-Track Studio export DAWproject but are untested here. Any other program, such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, FL Studio or GarageBand, can use upload one audio file per instrument, all starting at the same point.

Does everyone need an account?

Yes. Each member has a personal account (email and password) and joins your band from an invite link, QR code or email invite.

How soon after a session are the songs there?

It depends on the size of the session and your connection. For one 290 MB test export, the upload took about 65 seconds and the build about 45 seconds on one connection. Yours will vary.

Is the sound changed?

Each track is built from the audio files in your export, laid out as in your arrangement, and compressed for streaming to your phone. Whether those files include amp or effects depends on how your recording program writes them, so check your own export.

Mac or Windows?

Uploading in the browser works on any computer. The recording computer program, which uploads by itself, works on Linux. A Windows version is in early testing and not yet signed, so Windows will show a warning; a Mac test version is out for testers; nobody on our team has tried it on a real Mac yet.

Can I delete a session or my band?

You can delete your band (an admin types its name and confirms; it is read-only for 7 days, and can be undone) and your own account, after downloading everything if you like. Band admins can also remove a single session on the Sessions page, with 7 days to undo it.
