What DawnIX is

DawnIX is a Linux computer made for recording, with limited setup: start it, plug in your audio interface, pick your inputs, and record.

  • The audio system is set up for you. No drivers to hunt for, and only a few settings to choose.
  • Ardour is included. A full recording program, free, ready to go.
  • Bitwig Studio is sold separately. If you use Bitwig, DawnIX helps you get it from Bitwig. It starts with Bitwig’s own free trial, then you need a Bitwig licence. DawnIX does not come with Bitwig inside.
  • Muted Tune is built in. Sessions you record in Ardour go to your band’s page by itself, so everyone can mute their part and play along on their phone.

Try it on your own interface

Own a Behringer UMC1820 or a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2? DawnIX is set up for those two. Other class-compliant USB audio interfaces may work, but we have not tested them. When the downloads are ready, you will be able to start DawnIX from a USB stick and look around.

“Class-compliant” means the interface works without a driver. Recording works with those. A maker’s own mixer or effects app for the interface may not.

Trying it from a USB stick

If the USB stick and your audio interface share the same USB controller in your computer, you can get dropouts and crackles while recording. Many small computers have only one. Starting from the stick is for trying DawnIX. For regular recording, install it on the computer.

Checksums

Each download will list its SHA-256 checksum here, so you can check that the file you got is the file we made. They will appear when the downloads do.
